A spectacular find! 1929 finely-bound leather edition of Paul Gaughin's Noa Noa. Very good condition with hardly any wear - amazing! Gaughin travelled to Tahiti at the turn of the century and wrote this travelogue to help his audience understand his Parisian exhibit. Published in Paris with text in French. Other earlier editions are not leather nor this lovely but fetch a pretty penny. $85 plus shipping #finebinding #vintagebook #leatherbinding #paulgauguin #noanoa #tahiti #arthistory #gaughin #postimpressionism #postimpressionist

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903): Jeune garçon au bord de l'eau, ou Le Ruisseau (Clovis by a stream; A boy by the water), 1885, oil on canvas, 81.3 x 64.8 cm (25 1/2 x 32 inches), private collection The painting seems to record a very moving and particular moment in Gauguin’s life. There is good reason to believe that the small boy is Gauguin’s second and favourite son Clovis. In his early life, Gauguin worked as a stockbroker, leading an affluent life; and assembling a fine collection of impressionist paintings that included five Cézannes. With the financial crash of 1882, he became a full-time artist, having already produced work of considerable beauty and increasing individuality. His art however was unable to support a growing family. In October 1884, his Danish wife Mette returned with their five children to her family in Copenhagen. Gauguin joined them a month later. In June 1885, deeply frustrated by the hostility of Mette and her family to his art; by his continuing inability to support his family and his dislike of Copenhagen, Gauguin left his family and returned – extraordinarily with six year old Clovis – to Paris. Shortly afterwards he began 'Jeune garçon au bord de l'eau'. This painting marks a turning point. It gives unprecedented expression to his artistic and spiritual goal and joyously proclaims his freedom from a stifling, bourgeois existence. The dramatic change, both stylistic and visionary, is clearly seen when comparing it to his earlier works. The painting is signed bottom left, P,Gauguin and dated 85.

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903): Arearea; Jokes, 1892, Oil on canvas, 75 x 94 cm, Musée d'Orsay, Paris In his first visit to Tahiti, in search of traces of a primitive way of life, Gauguin took inspiration for imaginary scenes in his paintings from what he saw around him, as well as from local stories and ancient religious traditions. Arearea is representative of these works where dream and reality coexist. In the foreground, there are several motifs, which he had no doubt observed, as they recur throughout the paintings of this period. There are two women seated in the centre of the picture, a tree cutting across the canvas, and a red dog. The sky has disappeared; a succession of coloured planes – green, yellow, red – forms the structure of the composition. In the imaginary scene in the background, there are several women worshipping a statue. Gauguin has enlarged a small Maori statue to the size of a great Buddha, and has invented a sacred rite. All these elements create an enchanted world, full of both harmony and melancholy, where man lives under the protection of the gods, in a luxuriant natural environment, in an archaic, idealised Polynesia.Arearea is one of a collection of Tahitian paintings exhibited in Paris in November 1893. Gauguin wanted to justify his exotic trip. However, this exhibition did not receive the enthusiastic response the artist had hoped for. The titles in Tahitian irritated many of his friends, and the red dog provoked much sarcasm. Nonetheless, Gauguin considered Arearea to be one of his best paintings, and in 1895, he went so far as to buy it back for himself before leaving Europe for good. (Musée d'Orsay)

Well it's a snowy day, so we've been organizing our inventory and stumbled across this forgotten gem by Robert Phillip, likely of his wife Rochelle, painted sometime in the 1930s. Philipp was a post-impressionist painter who painted in a lyrical, expressive style. He is known for his portraits of his wife and of gay cafe society. Available at the gallery. #robertphillip #postimpressionism #postimpressionist #figurative #figurativeart #portrait #modernism #modernart #fineart #interiordesign #homedesign

Paul Gauguin: The Beautiful Angel (Madame Angele Satre, The Inkeeper at Pont-Aven), 1889,Oil on canvas, 92 x 73 cm, Musée d'Orsay, Paris Marie-Angélique Satre, who kept a hotel at Pont-Aven, was regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the area. About 1920, she explained the circumstances in which this portrait was painted: "Gauguin was very sweet and very miserable […]. He kept telling my husband he wanted to paint my portrait, so one day he started. […] but when he showed it to me, I said "How horrible!" and told him to take it away […]. Gauguin was very sad and said, crestfallen, that he had never painted such a good portrait as that one". The model's bewilderment when she saw the painting is hardly surprising. Gauguin, who had decided to "dare all", broke with the traditional practices of perspective and spatial unity. In a process taken from Japanese prints, he circled the portrait of Angélique Satre and laid it on a mainly decorative background, partitioning the forms and surrounding the figures with a darker outline. The rigid pose, the young woman's ceremonial costume and the inscription LA BELLE ANGELE printed in capital letters reinforce the solemnity of the portrait. On the left, Gauguin has inserted an anthropomorphic pot, in a Peruvian style, which adds symbolic force and seems to be an exotic version of a Breton idol. Regarded as a masterpiece by Degas, who bought it in 1891, La Belle Angèle is a striking illustration of Gauguin's main aesthetic concerns in the heteroclite assembly of various sources of inspiration which he regarded as primitive and in the simplification of the forms. (Musée d'Orsay)

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903): Le Repas; Les Bananes (The Meal; Bananas), 1891, Oil on paper glued on canvas, 73 x 92 cm, Musée d'Orsay, Paris Gauguin painted The Meal in the first months after his arrival in Tahiti. Despite his desire to paint life on the island, his first canvases are contrived. This is not a real meal, but a scene arranged in two separate registers: in the foreground a still life justifying the title of the painting, and in the background, two boys and a girl sitting in a row.The proportions of the still life are astonishing. The hand of bananas, called fei in Tahitian, takes up nearly a quarter of the composition with the enormous fruit bordering on vermilion and the purple shadow cast on the tablecloth. The carved wooden bowl holding coconut milk, but traditionally used for fish, is also an impressive size. To complete his composition and add splashes of colour, Gauguin has included a European faience bowl, a calabash serving as a jug, fruit, a partly-eaten guava and some oranges. A knife placed at an angle indicates depth. The white cloth, with its neat folds, is also a reminder of compositions by Cézanne or Manet. This carefully composed still life has nothing to do with a real meal, especially since it is not customary in Tahiti to eat at a table. Gauguin has put together these familiar items for purely decorative, exotic effect. The children sitting behind the table do not seem to be very interested in the food. They are casting sidelong glances as if worried or puzzled. The presence of a mysterious figure sitting in a pool of light in the courtyard intensifies the troubling dimension of the scene, the sense of which still escapes us today.

Le Havre Othon Friesz (1879, Le Havre, France - 1949, Paris, France) The painter made his artistic debut in 1900 at the Salon of the Société des Artistes français. Then he exhibited work in 1904 at the first Salon d'Automne and again in 1906 at the Salon des Indépendants. Over the years Friesz abandoned his former nature-orientated concept in favour of works formed by #Fauvism. The artiste travelled extensively, et al. to Portugal in 1911 and to Belgium in 1912. Stays in Munich and Düsseldorf as well as the participation in exhibitions by the Berlin Secession made Friesz's work known in Germany as well. #Friesz, who participated in exhibitions not only throughout Europe but also in the Armory Show in New York as well as in Chicago, taught between 1912 and 1921 at the Académie Moderne in #Paris, from 1925 at the Académie Scandinave and from 1944 at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. An outstanding late work is the decoration he did with Raoul Dufy for the Palais de Chaillot on the occasion of the world fair in Paris in 1937. Even though the artist used a more traditional, austere technique in his late works, several of his earlier works, especially from 1907, are regarded as the boldest examples of Fauvism. During the last thirty years of his life, he painted in a style completely removed from that of his earlier colleagues and his contemporaries. Having abandoned the lively arabesques and brilliant colors of his #Fauve years, Friesz returned to the more sober palette he had learned in Le Havre from his professor Charles Lhuillier and to an early admirationfor Poussin, Chardin, and  Corot. He painted in a manner that respected Cézanne's ideas of logical composition, simple tonality, solidity of volume, and distinct separation of planes. A faint baroque flavor adds vigor to his (most known for) landscapes, still lifes, and figure paintings. #arte #artwork #art #artplease #postimpressionismo #artist #artstagram #painting #artlove #fineart #color #drawing #postimpressionist #Travelblogger #travelling #landscapepainting #travel #postimpressionism #amazingart #masterpiece #oilpainting #artgallery #artofinstegram #instaartist

"The Starry Night" 1889 by Dutch Post-Impressionist Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) ✨✨✨ @themuseumofmodernart ✨NYC✨✨✨ ✨Regarded as one of Vincent Van Gogh's finest works and most recognized paintings in the history of of Western culture, it barely needs an introduction. ✨A turbulent and even agitated evening Van Gogh paints as seen from looking out his east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Remy-de-Provence, just before sunrise. Intense swirling patterns swirl across its surface like waves. ✨A star-filled night sky dominated by a crescent moon and the brightest star out that very evening seen on the right side of the cypress is Venus. ✨Dominating the foreground of this scene is the flamelike cypress that unites the churning sky and the quiet village below. ✨The cypress could be seen as the bridge between life as represented by the earth and death represented by the sky. ✨The church's steeple inspired by those found in his native holland is set in his idealized village beneath his starry, starry night, rendered in short brushstrokes of thickly applied paint that sets its surface in emoting rolling motion. ✨There is so much of Van Gogh's anguish and soul poured into every swirl of this most unforgettable painting. ✨In 1971, singing artist Don McLean released a stirring song, paying homage to this misunderstood artist and his work, titled "Starry, Starry Night". ✨One of my favourites. ✨✨✨ #vincentvangogh #vangogh #dutchpainter #postimpressionism #postimpressionist #stremy #arles #starrynight #myphoto #myphotography #artoftheday #arthistory #landscape #venus #landscape #landscapeartist #moma #NYC #huffingtonpost #museums #netherlands ✨✨✨

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903): Le Cheval blanc (The White Horse), 1898, Oil on canvas, 140 x 91.5 cm, Musée d'Orsay, Paris Gauguin painted this famous picture during his second stay in Tahiti. He liked to roam through the countryside and explore the mountains and forests of the interior. These out-of-the-way places swarmed with all sorts of wildlife and plants which enchanted him.But this scene is not taken from real life; it is an imaginary, synthetic vision of a Tahitian landscape. The contorted branches of a native tree called bourao, a sort of hibiscus, along with lilies and imaginary flowers in the foreground make a decorative frame for the main motif. The sky and the horizon are locked out of this enclosed space.A white horse, its coat tinged with the green of the vegetation, has given the painting its title. It is drinking, standing in the middle of a stream which flows vertically through the composition. The solitary animal probably has a symbolic meaning related to the Tahitians' beliefs about the passage of the soul into another world. In Polynesia, white is associated with death and worship of the gods.Behind the sacred animal, two nude figures are riding bareback into the distance. The tiered arrangement of these three animated motifs in the landscape accentuates the vertical, flat vision of the scene. To intensify the decorative effect, Gauguin has used a sumptuous palette. The greens – from grass green to emerald – and the deep blues contrast with orange and pink notes and the coppery colour of the riders' skin.An impression of paradisiacal serenity emanates from this canvas which has become a veritable icon. The pharmacist in Tahiti who commissioned the picture did not appreciate Gauguin's daring use of colour. He refused it on the grounds that the horse was too green. (Musée d'Orsay)

painters_paintings : @canucwhatotherscant There have always been some authorities who determine the value of an artwork. These days 'authorities' determine who is artist and who is not, and as Marcel Duchamp states: "Art is whatever an artist says it is.". But I think, popularity of an artist or artwork comes only after the approval of the majority by means of a common aesthetics
canucwhatotherscant : My friend actually this is not an opinion i share . Currently an artwork , practically , is much valuable as the bid it can get in any auction.
canucwhatotherscant : However , which you probably know very well considering you are an art historian , the bourgeoisie class, has guided the direction of art streams , as a means of obtaining the might and power , which is newly redefined by economics .. for example ;the golden age of netherland is a good example to the triangular relation between economics - sociology - art... the class who owns and guides the art has completely changed after that era , besides the content of the painting art itself
painters_paintings : @canucwhatotherscant first of all we don't need any title to express our ideas as my opinions are not exclusive because I am an art historian and considering you're not an art historian you may have some decisive ideas on this area, as you have. But we should follow a good reasoning. That auction example of yours does not contradicts my argument. Money is an important part of authority. On the other hand if you reduce the value of an artwork to the degree of difficulty to imitate it and argue that Rembrandt's paintings are more valuable than the impressionists' ones because the formers are more difficult to reproduce, I only say, everyone's free to express her/his ideas without any restriction.
canucwhatotherscant : No you got me wrong, i didnt say anything about to reproduce ... my statement was an interdisciplinary opinion. I am a finance man , a history nut , and a very poor painter.
canucwhatotherscant : What i said , we can admire the genius in an original artwork , even if you go 4 th century roman tiles, considering its own era.
painters_paintings : @canucwhatotherscant well anyway, after all we are all some art lovers lookig for our personal beauties.
canucwhatotherscant : The way i measure it is , the sources to create such an artwork , talent and hardwork in forming the shapes and colours , genius , vision . Impressionism was just an example . Assume that nobody was paying for art , how we could decide which one is more valuable. Anyway that is a very long issue to debate here and i believe many discipline' s wisdom should be involved... besides that i like Gaugin :D

Paul Gauguin: When Will You Marry? (Tahitian: Nafea faa ipoipo), 1892, Oil on canvas, 101 x 77 cm (40 in × 30 in), Fondation Beyeler, Riehen, Switzerland (until 2015) When Gauguin included this painting in the exhibition he mounted at Durand-Ruel's gallery in Paris in 1893, its price of 1500 francs was higher than that of any other work included in the show, demonstrating the importance he attached to it. Because of its exoticism it was a work that was guaranteed to appeal to a Parisian audience, and Gauguin's careful inscription of the title onto the painting points to his control of his audience. On loan to the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland for nearly a half-century, 'When Will You Marry?' was sold privately by the family of Rudolf Staechelin to an unknown buyer, reportedly to Qatar Museums, in February 2015 for close to US $300 million (£197 million), the highest price ever paid for a work of art. Gauguin travelled to Tahiti for the first time in 1891. His hope was to find "an edenic paradise where he could create pure, 'primitive' art", rather than the primitivist faux works being turned out by painters in France. Upon arrival, he found that Tahiti was not as he imagined it: it had been colonised in the 18th century, and at least two-thirds of the indigenous people of the island had been killed by diseases brought by Europeans. "Primitive" culture had been wiped out. Despite this, he painted many pictures of native women: nude, dressed in traditional Tahitian clothes, and dressed in Western-style dresses, as is the rear figure in When Will You Marry?. The question seems to be posed by the woman in the background, of her companion whose desire to find a husband is suggested by the flower she is wearing behind her ear. That it should deal with the ritual surrounding Tahitian marriage was a clear attempt to appeal to an audience who would have recognized the subject of the eminently popular Marriage of Loti, which Gauguin had read and which helped shape contemporary Western perceptions about the languorous Tahitian women.
